3 Types Of Backhand Slice

by John Debnam Stroke Gallery

A nice video from Essential Tennis about the different uses of the slice backhand.

In the video you can see

1)- the bread and butter slice that is used to rally deep

2)- the slice backhand used as an attacking shot, where you want the ball lower over the net

3)- the defensive slice backhand, where you use it to lob or just play the ball higher over the net to give your self time to recover.

In all cases the continental grip should be used – the racket face not too open, and the follow-through will vary slightly, depending on which one you are going to play.

A way to practice this on your own, is to simply drop feed and try the 3 different types of shots, perhaps hit 10 rally types, then 10 attacking and 10 defensive.
Once you feel you are getting there, try tossing the ball further away from you.
