Some Thinking Ideas For Singles In Tennis

by John Debnam Thinking Tennis

Thinking is of course what most players do up to the point of playing a match.

So here are a couple of ideas/tips to improve your thinking in singles.

1 You have to understand that there are only two ways to win a point

- either you hit a winner

- or your opponent must make an error

2 Tennis strategy can be reduced to just two basic categories

- offense
- defense

3 Which strategy is best for you depends on

- personality
- skills
- athletism

4 The most common mistake made by club players is the wrong choice of strategy- when for example they try to be an attacking player, but the only have the shots to be defensive.

So if you know your capabilities then use them to define your type of strategy.

TIP OF THE DAY
Next time you are warming up your forehand, try to release the racket and pass it over to the other hand when reaching the back swing.

Most players either swing too quick and so lose control, or grip too tight.
Remember that the acceleration we are all looking for to produce a more powerful shot, is made by accelerating from the back swing to the point of contact, and not from the back swing all the way through to the follow trhough.
