The Federer Topspin Backhand - A Video Analysis

by John Debnam Stroke Gallery

A great 360 degree video breakdown of the Fed’s great backhand courtesy of TennisOxygen on You Tube

It explains the keypoints of his stroke, not that you and I can hit as well as this, but if we can get the keypoints, we have a chance to hit a pretty good one handed topspin backhand.

1st keypoint –  the “little L” the 90 degree angle is kept through the stroke.

2nd keypoint – the shoulder turn..its the shoulder that turns and the racket goes with it…the first turn.

3rd keypoint – the last step is the foundation of the stroke..note where his racket is when he makes that nice final step.

4th keypoint – look where the racket is on the backswing..this needs alot of practice…but look where it gets to.

5th keypoint – look how long the left hand is on the racket…

6th keypoint..the butt of the racket drives through first..

7th keypoint – and at 7.13 on the video the contact point..way out infront.

8th keypoint – the follow through, and he maintains the 90 degree angle from keypoint 1

Now out you go and practice this…
